Ogham Keyboard Mapper

Runish Keyboard Mapper

Note for Google chrome Users: If Runestaves do not display then click here: http://gschoppe.com/blog/fixing-unicode-support-in-google-chrome/

The Ogham alphabet was used by the Irish and Scots Gaels in the dark ages.

Microsoft claim that Windows 7 and 8 support the ogham alphabet. They have provided a font that enables you to read documents and websites that use ogham characters but not a keyboard to allow you to type them in.

This mapper will allow anybody using a standard keyboard to use that keyboard to type Modern English runestaves. The mapper is generated using standard Microsoft software.

The mapper was written and tested on a British keyboard using 32-bit windows. If you want to use it using a different keyboard or version of windows try it first; if some of the keys do not work contact me and I’ll try to provide a tailored version for your keyboard. It should be straightforward but as I do not have your keyboard I need you to test it!

The mapper uses the language bar – your existing keyboard map is still there – you will move from one to the other using the language bar or a control key.

 - this is a view of the language bar.

The system needs to be using a font which displays Ogham characters – examples are Microsoft’s Segoe UI Symbol (standard with windows 7) or Code2000.

A chart which shows which key on your keyboard is used for which Ogham character is included in the zip file and can also be viewed below.

The mapper (other than the underlying Microsoft software) is my copyright but issued free under English Law. If you find it useful please pay £5 (€6 or US$8) to my PayPal account using my email address (eramm@blueyonder.co.uk).

As always you are advised to take a back-up before modifying anything; you are however using a standard Microsoft programme.

a) eroghm03.zip should contain the folder eroghm03 itself containing the following files, depending how you have folder-view configured you may not be able to see the ending after the full stop:

·         setup.exe

·         3 by .msi files(eroghm03_amd64, eroghm03_i386 and eroghm03_ia64)

·         4 by folders, one for each of the .msi files and another, each of which should contain a variant eroghm03.dll file

·         runic keyboard.docx (instructions and keyboard chart)

b) rename eroghm03.zip.x to eroghm03.zip and unzip it to a suitable location on your computer.

To do this you may have to:

·             drag and drop the attachment eroghm03.zip.x to the desktop

·             right-click on the .zip file

·             the last but 1 option should be 'rename'; click it and delete the last two characters (.x)

·             right-click on the .zip file

·             the second or third option should be 'extract all', use that to extract to the desktop

c) click on the appropriate .msi file in directory eroghm03 (eroghm03_i386.msi for 32-bit windows 7) – NOT setup.exe.

d) after a surprising length of time your anti-Virus system may ask you if you want it to make changes to your computer – say ‘yes’

e) at long last you will get the message ‘installation Complete’

f) In some cases the Runish keyboard will have been automatically been put as on option in your Keyboard icon .

If not:

g) Go to Control Panel ‘Region and Language’, Click on the ‘Keyboard and Languages’ Tab, then click on ‘Change Keyboards’; find EN English (United Kingdom) then click on ‘Add’ and choose ‘Ogham’;

h) check the language bar option (on Change Keyboards) is set to 'docked to the keyboard' and then click ‘apply’

You should now find a keyboard icon on your task bar that allows you to move between the standard UK Keyboard and the Ogham one.
